ON FRIDAY JULY 17, TEACH GOOD TROUBLE

Hosting Your Own GTLO TEACH Event

Knowledge is power. Teach! is all about TEACHING your community about the importance of civic engagement, voting, and civil rights. This non-partisan education-focused day can include numerous topics, such as voter registration, state or federal voting laws, or the history of gerrymandering across the US. This day will be used to keep voters aware of their rights and empower them as they head to the polls.

What is a Teach-In?

Hosting a teach-in provides a way for you to teach people in your community about an issue, build connections with neighbors, and facilitate a space for discussion and taking action on issues they are passionate about. They serve as a foundation for movements, and should be participatory, empowering, and action-driven.

If there’s not already a registered Good Trouble Lives On TEACH event in your local area, the power is in your hands to host your own.

How to Plan a Teach-In

Here are some tips to help you get you started:

#1 — Reserving Space
Your space could include a library, community center, etc., somewhere accessible for members to attend. Choose a secure location that will be able to accommodate the number of people who you think will attend. Consider locations that may have equipment ready for you to teach, such as a projector, sound equipment, seating, and boards. Please refrain from hosting this on private property.

#2 — Creating your content
Reflect on the questions above as you create your agenda. Think about pressing issues your community is facing regarding voting rights.

Set a purpose, including key learnings you want to make sure attendees will leave with and can share with others. What’s the history behind the topic? What’s happening now? How resources can you share?

Frame your agenda to provide an introduction of your topic, choose your speakers to discuss share their expertise, and give space for reflection and conversation. Your event is meant to inspire and educate, so be sure to give ways attendees can take action after the event! Our Host Guide has content you can utilize.

#3 — Coordinating Logistics
Working with your partners is crucial in running a successful event. Be sure to hold meetings with fellow organizers as you lead up to the event to smooth out any issues regarding agenda, content, and day-of logistics. You don’t need to do this alone!
As you strategize, be sure to keep accessibility in mind. Ensure that your event is accessible to folks with disabilities, such as parking spaces, restrooms, and barrier-free paths. Our Host Guide will have specific resources on accessibility.

Spread the word!
Now that your event is in motion, we need to spread the word! Upon signing up to host an event, we’ll provide a Host Guide with tips and resources to help you spread the word about your event! Don’t forget:

> Reach out to your social networks and email your friends, family, and community members to let them know when and where you’ll be hosting your TEACH! event.

> If you’re hosting a larger event, reach our to local organizations to partner!
